Accurate waste characterization plays a critical role in scheduled waste management, regulatory compliance, and environmental risk control. Biochem Laboratories provides waste characterization and TCLP testing services to assist industries in identifying, classifying, and managing scheduled waste in accordance with Malaysia’s Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005.

Understanding Waste Characterization

Waste characterization is a lab test identifying the properties of industrial waste to check if it is hazardous (ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic). This determines its Scheduled Waste (SW) code under EQR 2005 and dictates safe handling, which protects manufacturers from penalties and ensures disposal contractors accept the material.

Why Waste Characterization Matters

  • Meet DOE Requirements: Assign the correct SW code under EQR 2005 with traceable, ISO/IEC 17025 results.
  • Avoid RM500,000 Penalties: Mishandling scheduled waste can trigger fines under Section 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
  • Lower Disposal Costs: Defensible classification prevents over-paying for unnecessary hazardous-waste disposal.
  • Protect Workers and the Environment: Identify handling and storage risks before an incident occurs.
  • Support ESG Reporting: Detect recoverable or recyclable components in waste streams.
  • Audit-Ready Records: Reports formatted for direct submission with eSWIS and DOE audits.

What Is The TCLP Test

The TCLP test (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, EPA Method 1311) is the standard laboratory test for measuring how much toxic material would leach from a waste sample under landfill conditions. It is required when disposal facilities request leachability data or when a waste sits at the borderline between hazardous and non-hazardous classification.

TCLP TEST PROCEDURE (4 STAGES):

  1. Separation: Liquids and solids are separated.
  2. Size Reduction: Solid material is reduced to particles ≤9.5 mm.
  3. Extraction: Solids are mixed with mildly acidic extraction fluid at 20× sample weight, then tumbled for 18 hours.
  4. Analysis: Leachate is filtered and tested against regulatory thresholds for metals, VOCs, SVOCs, pesticides, and herbicides.

What’s Analyzed In A Waste Characterization Test

  • Physical Properties: color, texture, moisture content, flash point
  • Chemical Characteristics: pH, COD, BOD, total solids, oil & grease
  • Heavy Metals: lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, nickel, arsenic, barium, silver
  • Organic Compounds: VOCs, SVOCs, hydrocarbons, phenols, solvents
  • Leachability (TCLP Test): toxicity leaching profile under simulated landfill conditions
  • Reactivity & Corrosivity: water-reactive, oxidizing, acidic, or alkaline properties/li>
  • Ignitability: flash point determination for liquids and combustion testing for solids/li>

How Biochem Conducts Waste Characterization

1) Consultation & Test Scope

Share your waste source and disposal route. Our chemists recommend the right test scope so you only pay for what’s required.

2) Sampling

Submit samples to our Penang, Johor Bahru, or Selangor branch — or request on-site collection for VOC-sensitive or bulk waste.

3) Laboratory Testing

ISO/IEC 17025-accredited analysis using ICP-OES, GC-MS, AAS, and standardized TCLP extraction equipment.

4) Data Interpretation & SW Code

Results compared against EQR 2005 thresholds; recommended SW code provided with full regulatory citation.

5) Reporting

Audit-ready report delivered in approximately 2 weeks. Expedited turnaround available on request.
