Halogen testing is the process of identifying halogen elements such as Fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br), and Iodine (I) in materials. These elements can be harmful to human health, the environment, and product performance if present in high amounts.
Detecting halogens in products is essential to safeguard health, comply with regulations, and maintain product integrity.
At BIOCHEM, we use reliable and standardized methods to measure halogen content in various materials. The procedure depends on the sample type and the level of accuracy required.
We begin halogen testing by preparing samples using a bomb calorimeter in accordance with recognized standards such as EN 14582, USEPA 5050, and equivalent methods. This controlled combustion process converts halogen compounds in the sample into halide ions, which are then collected in an absorbing solution.
Following combustion, the collected solution is analyzed using Ion Chromatography (IC) to precisely measure halide ions such as fluoride, chloride, bromide, and iodide. IC provides high accuracy and sensitivity, which is ideal for assessing halogen levels in chemicals, polymers, and electronic materials.
